As the sound designer for The Wild Party, I collaborated with the director, music director, and other designers to help the audience experience this wild night of love, lust, and violence from 1928. The music is the spotlight of this show, as it is a almost entirely sung through, so my primary focus was on ensuring everyone in the audience experienced the magic of the actors and band as accurately as possible. I also explored some moments where Burrs, our antagonist, breaks from reality and experiences hallucinations.
In this track, Burrs is hallucinating the voice of Queenie, his lover and victim of abuse, in his head after she has failed to choose him over Black, a man she met that same night. He and the audience around surrounded by Queenie's voice as she says lines we have heard throughout the play.
This track contains a crescendoing chorus of ensemble actors asking "Who's it gonna be?" as if surrounding Burrs when he is making the decision during "Make Me Happy" if he should shoot either Queenie, Black, or himself at the end of the show. Even though the ensemble cast is lying asleep on the floor, Burrs hears them echoing in his head.
